Tree lines
Every fall the City parks department ties straw bales to the tree trunks in this park.
After a little investigation, I think I found a possible reason why. It may be that the bales are a safeguard to hold back sediment and debris in case the area floods. Just above these trees is Camel's Back, a tall land formation that's part of the foothills. Several years ago, fire burned nearly all of the vegetation. If there was a very heavy rainfall, it's possible the water rushing down the hills could carry a lot of debris and mud, and flood the street and surrounding areas. So, the bales would help slow the rush of flooding.
Anyway, that's my theory. Does anyone else know?

At first glance it looks like these hay bales are trying to hide, and not doing a very good job! Interesting that they might be used for flood control. Let us know if you find out exactly what's going on. I hear the next 2 weeks are going to be really stormy in CA; be prepared for that to head your way.
That's funny :), the bales do look like they are trying to hide.
I haven't found info yet about the bales. I'll keep looking.
I think the storms you've been having are hitting here tonight. We're having high winds and rain.
