On hearing from an old friend...

A letter from a friend, we
compare past and present in words,
worlds apart between south and west
yet we lived in the same house
four years or more

It’s the commonality of structure—
walls, ceilings, floor,
rising out of the Midwest soil
we understand,
architecture of memory, of love
that makes this house

[for Susan]

Though our communication wanes at times of absence, I'm aware of a strength that emanates in the background.

It is a sweet thing, friendship, a dear balm,
A happy and auspicious bird of calm...
- Percy Bysshe Shelley
